Full-time 1 day ago Full Job Description Job Summary The Court views the Law Clerk position as a training opportunity with time to watch court proceedings, including drug and mental health treatment courts, witness oral arguments, and gain motion practice.
There will be a daily opportunity to network with judges and attorneys.
Based on the Law Clerks interests and goals for this learning opportunity, the Court can tailor the experience received.
In addition, the Law Clerk will receive day to day mentoring and direction from our Judges (bios attached).
Working closely with judicial officers to review court files, conduct legal research, write memoranda, and prepare judicial decisions, this position is an excellent opportunity for recent law school graduates interested in state courts, trial court advocacy, civil litigation, and criminal law.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities 100.
00% - Working as a law clerk in a mid-sized court system, there will be lots of opportunity for one-on-one discussions with Judges.
Responsibilities include reviewing case files, identifying pertinent factual and legal issues, conducting independent legal research, and preparing legal memoranda and draft judicial decisions.
Law Clerks participate in jury trials.
The Law Clerk must be able to maintain complete confidentiality in case-related matters and abide by the Model Code of Conduct for Michigan Trial Court Employees.
The court will consider remote work options, which include the ability to watch court proceedings.
Physical Requirements and/or Working Conditions Work is performed primarily in an office environment and involves work in a sitting position.
The Van Buren courthouse is ADA accessible.
Tasks involve the ability to exert light physical effort in sedentary to light work, but may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects.

Minimum Qualifications & Experience Minimum Qualifications/Experience - Applicants must possess a juris doctor (JD) from an accredited law school and must have either sat for the most recent bar exam or plan to sit for the next available bar exam.
Applicants who are already licensed to practice law in Michigan are also encouraged to apply.
Internships will be considered.
Additional Information Applicants must complete a county application form and submit a letter of interest, resume, writing sample, and law school transcript.
Employment is dependent on a criminal background check and drug screen.
By statute, the Law Clerk serves a one-year term that may be extended for a second one-year term.

Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
